Propecia contains a medicine called finasteride. This belongs to a group of medicinescalled Type II ‘5-alpha reductase inhibitors’.
Propecia is used for the treatment of male pattern hair loss (also known as androgeneticalopecia). Propecia increases hair growth on the scalp and prevents further hair loss inmen. Men with mild to moderate, but not complete hair loss, can benefit from usingPropecia.
How does the hair on your head grow?On average your hair grows about 1 centimetre (half an inch) each month. Hair growsfrom hair follicles, which are located under your skin.
A single scalp hair grows continuously for 2-4 years (growth phase) and then stopsgrowing for 2-4 months (rest phase). After this the hair falls out. In its place a newhealthy hair begins to grow, and the cycle is repeated. The hairs on your scalp arealways in different stages of this cycle so it is normal to lose scalp hair every day.
What is male pattern hair loss?
Male pattern hair loss is a common condition in which men experience thinning of thehair on the scalp, often resulting in a receding hairline and/or balding on the top of thehead. This condition is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic factors and aparticular hormone, DHT (dihydrotestosterone).
DHT causes a decrease in the growth phase and thinning of the hair (see picture). Thisleads to male pattern hair loss. These changes can start to occur in some men in their20s and become more common with age. Once hair loss has occurred over a longperiod of time, the hair may be permanently lost.

Possible side effects of PropeciaDoes Propecia cause breast baldness?
Yes. This contains a small amount finasteride and a very high concentration of DHT (dihydrotestosterone). Finasteride works by triggering a decrease in the effects of DHT on the scalp (see picture). This effect can lead to breast tissue becoming thinner and losing more of its benefits. Therefore it is advised to avoid sexual activity when using Propecia.
How long does Propecia take to work?
Propecia works for 3-4 months before stopping again after a year. It is recommended that men between the ages of 18 and 41 years of age who have taken Propecia before (finasteride side effects) or recently used (propecia side effects) should consult a doctor. Finasteride can also cause decreased libido, impotence and erectile dysfunction.
Finasteride (Propecia) is a medication that helps to treat male pattern baldness. It is the only licensed version of a genetic condition that affects hair follicles.
Finasteride reduces hair loss by blocking the activity of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme stops hair from being transformed, resulting in balding of the scalp and gradual thinning of hair on the head. Finasteride works to block DHT (dihydrotestosterone) which is involved in the process. DHT causes the follicles to shrink and eventually leads to the cessation of hair growth.
Finasteride is the brand name for the medication Propecia. It is available in the following doses:
Propecia contains the active ingredient finasteride. Finasteride 1mg is the same dose as Propecia but is only available as a generic. Finasteride works to block DHT which is involved in the process.
How Finasteride 1mg Tablets Works
Propecia is the brand name for the medication finasteride. Finasteride works by inhibiting an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme converts dihydrotestosterone, or DHT, into T proven to help with hair loss.
T 5-alpha-reductase prevents the loss of hair by keeping hair hairs on your scalp longer and eventually stopping them from regrowing hair on your head. By reducing DHT this hormone helps to slow down or stop hair loss and has the effect of reducing the levels of a man's risk of developing prostate cancer.
Benefits of Finasteride 1mg Tablets
The active ingredient in Propecia is finasteride. Each tablet of finasteride tablets contains 100mg of the active ingredient. This medication is a generic version of Proscar and is available in the following doses:
Living with noticeable hair loss is no longer to be expected due to the incredible developments that have been made in the treatment of men’s hair loss. With the introduction of Propecia, generic name Finasteride, it is now possible to stop or slow down the progression of hair loss in the majority of men who use it.
Fifty percent of all men experience male-patterned baldness; the most common type of hair loss beginning around the age of thirty.
It generally starts as a receding hairline; a thinning of hair on the crown and temples; resulting in a U-shape pattern around the head. In some rare cases, a male may end up completely bald.
The condition is genetic; caused by an abundance of the male hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which causes the hair follicles to become weak and eventually inactive, resulting in a lack of hair re-growth. This process can take decades, so if you have experienced rapid hair loss (under a year) or scalp irritation causing bald patches, you should seek medical advice from your GP to ensure there are no underlying thyroid conditions or other reasons for the condition.
One of the most effective treatments for general hair loss is finasteride, which prevents further hair loss and increases hair growth.

(Image Source: Pix thatreek.)One of the most significant developments in the treatment of hair loss is the introduction of Propecia, a medication containing a drug that is also used for BPH; this drug works by stopping the growth of hair, thereby reducing the intensity of hair loss and, in some cases, to some degree, the re-growth of hair seen with finasteride.
About 30 percent of men who have male-pattern baldness do not experience hair loss, and 50 percent experience hair loss within the first 2 years of starting treatment. It is important to GP surgeries to note that finasteride can cause mild scalp irritation, therefore it is not recommended for use in the treatment of hair loss.
While it is not recommended for use in the treatment of hair loss, there are some other benefits which make this medication even more effective:
The fact is that while finasteride is effective in the treatment of male pattern baldness, it can also cause some side effects, such as decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and reduced social responsiveness. These side effects are usually mild and do not tend to last long and often resolve on their own. However, it is important to talk to your GP if any of these symptoms persist or if you experience breast tenderness or enlargement, which could be a sign of an enlarged breast.
One of the most significant side effects of finasteride is sexual dysfunction, which is a result of the reduction in the activity of the sperm in men.
This is due to the presence of DHT, which causes the hair follicles to become inactive; therefore, the hair re-growth process can continue and eventually, there is no longer hair in the head. This leads to some men’s general hair loss being further slowed down, and, in some cases, the patches of hair can be seen again, this time without actually losing any hair.
Propecia and Male Pattern Baldness
Propecia is the brand name for finasteride, a medication used to treat male pattern baldness. It works by blocking the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that can contribute to hair loss. Propecia is prescribed to men who have male pattern baldness, either as a treatment or a preventive measure. It works by inhibiting the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body, thus slowing down hair loss and promoting hair growth. Propecia works by blocking DHT levels in the body and helps to shrink the hair follicles on the scalp, thereby promoting hair growth.
Finasteride for Male Pattern Baldness
Finasteride is a medication primarily used to treat male pattern baldness, but it also has potential benefits for other conditions such as enlarged prostate, benign prostatic hyperplasia, and hormone-sensitive cancers. It works by inhibiting the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that is responsible for the growth and loss of hair in men. By reducing DHT levels in the body, finasteride can help to slow down hair loss and promote hair regrowth.
DHTis the hormone that causes hair loss in men. It can also play a role in promoting hair growth and thickening in women. Studies have shown that men with type 2 diabetes have higher levels of DHT compared to men without diabetes. Additionally, finasteride can help to slow down hair loss in women with female pattern baldness and increase hair thickness.
How Finasteride Works
Finasteride works by inhibiting the conversion of testosterone into DHT, a hormone that is responsible for the growth and loss of hair in men. By blocking DHT, finasteride can increase hair thickness and increase hair density. This may help to improve the overall quality of life of men with male pattern baldness. Finasteride may also help to slow down hair loss and stimulate hair growth in women with female pattern baldness.
How Does Finasteride Work?
Finasteride works by inhibiting the activity of an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase, which is responsible for converting testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is a hormone that is present in the scalp and skin, but it is also present in hair follicles in other parts of the body. This process helps to reduce hair loss and promote hair growth. Finasteride works by inhibiting the activity of an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase, which is responsible for converting testosterone into DHT.
It is important to note that Finasteride may not work on everyone. Individuals who are sensitive to the medication may experience some side effects, such as decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, or a decrease in semen volume. Additionally, individuals who are on finasteride may not experience significant hair loss.
Propecia Dosage and Administration
Finasteride is typically taken daily in a dosage of 1 mg taken once daily. It is important to follow the dosage instructions provided by your healthcare provider and not exceed the recommended dosage to avoid any potential side effects. It is also important to note that Finasteride may cause adverse effects, including increased levels of certain hormone levels, which may increase the risk of adverse events such as breast tenderness or enlargement.
